با ورود منابع نور مصنوعی از زمان جنگ جهانی دوم، توجه به استفاده از نور طبیعی کمتر شد و طراحان تصور می کردند ساختمان های بدون پنجره از نظر سرمایش، گرمایش و آکوستیک قابل کنترل ترند؛ ساخته شدن مدارس و کارخانه هایی فاقد پنجره حاصل همین تفکر بود.
نیاز به نور همواره در زمره ی مهمترین نیازهای ما انسان ها قرار داشته است. ورود نور به داخل غار ها و پناهگاههای اولیه ساکنان آن را قادر می ساخته تا محیط اطراف خود را بهتر ببینند، فعالیتهای خود را بهتر انجام دهند، در جریان چرخه ی شبانه روز قرار بگیرند و خود را با آن هماهنگ کنند- چیزی که امروزه می دانیم برای سلامتی فیزیکی و روحی انسان حیاتی است.
تکنولوژی ساخت پنجره در دیوار و سقف برای ورود نور به داخل فضا در طول زمان تغییرات بسیاری کرده است. اگرچه ساخت “شیشه” به سه هزار سال پیش از میلاد بر می گردد؛ اما در آن زمان هنوز از شیشه برای پوشاندن روزنه های ساختمان استفاده نمی شد. پیش از قرن 16 در انگلستان، بیشتر پنجره ها دارای ساختاری سنگی یا چوبی و بدون شیشه بوده اند و برای پوشاندن روزنه ها از پارچه، کاغذ و … استفاده می شد. شیشه تنها در ساختمان های مهم تر و به صورت قطعات کوچک نگه داشته شده توسط قاب های مشبک به کار گرفته می شدند. در قرن شانزدهم با بالاتر رفتن سطح رفاه مردم، پنجره ها رفته رفته بزرگتر شدند اگرچه استفاده از شیشه هنوز آنقدر معمول نبود اما استفاده از آن رو به افزایش بود. در قرن هفدهم با تولید قطعات بزرگ تر شیشه، پنجره ها مرتفع تر و عریض تر شدند. با انقلاب صنعتی انگلستان و استفاده از دیوارهای شیشه ای و پنجره های کنجی در گوشه های ساختمان، امکان دریافت مقادیر بیشتری نور در فضاهای داخلی فراهم شد.
در قرن های 19 و 20، افزایش فشارها برای استفاده ی بهینه و اقتصادی از فضا موجب شد تا ارتفاع سقف ها و در نتیجه ی آن، نفوذ نور روز به داخل فضا کاهش یابد. تولید کنندگان منابع نور مصنوعی نیز از فرصت استفاده کرده و مردم را به استفاده از لامپ ها تشویق کردند. تا پیش از 1960 اینگونه تصور می شد که نور مصنوعی باید تنها منبع روشنایی ساختمان ها باشد و این تفکر، لامپ ها را به یک نیاز ضروری در ساختمان ها تبدیل کرد. استفاده از نور روز دیگر تکنیک عملکردی برای نورپردازی فضای داخلی به حساب نمی آمد و کارخانه ها و مدارس جدید بدون پنجره ساخته شدند.
بحران انرژی در سال 1970 مردم را واداشت تا به دنبال راه جدیدی برای تامین روشنایی باشند که نیازمند سوخت های فسیلی محدود و غیرقابل جایگزین نباشد. از همان زمان، تولیدکنندگان ابزارهای استفاده از نور روز مجددا وارد عرصه شدند و تولیدات خود را برای تامین نیاز روزافزون به منبع نور طبیعی و مقرون به صرفه افزایش دادند. اگرچه نورپردازی با نور روز کاملا رایگان و بدون هزینه نیست؛ چرا که تعبیه ی پنجره برای ورود نور، مشکلاتی از قبیل از دست دادن و ورود ناخواسته ی گرما را نیز به دنبال دارد و استفاده از کنترل کننده برای نور بیش از حد را ضروری می سازد ولی با این همه در بسیاری از موارد موجب صرفه جویی می شود (Phillips, 2004) (Brain, 2015) (Sharman, 2017).

نور روز در معماری پایدار
محیط طبیعی، زندگی روزمره ی انسان را تحت تاثیر قرار می دهد و دارای اثرات مثبتی بر سلامتی و تندرستی او خواهد بود. پِژوهش ها حاکی از آن است که میان استفاده از نور طبیعی و پیشگیری از بیماری هایی نظیر ام اس، نرمی استخوان، فشار خون، اختلالات خلقی فصلی و برخی بیماری های خود ایمنی ارتباط وجود دارد. تحقیقات همچنین نشان می دهند که قرار گیری در معرض نور خورشید به عنوان یک استرس زدای طبیعی عمل می کند.
معماری پسیو که برای اهدافی نظیر نورپردازی، سرما و گرما و به منظور کاهش نیاز به روشنایی مصنوعی و دستگاههای تهویه مطبوع، بر محیط طبیعی تکیه می کند، به یکی از جریان های اصلی و هدایت کننده ی طراحی پایدار تبدیل شده است. راه حل های نوآورانه در معماری پسیو، منابع طبیعی و تجدید پذیر را به گونه ای کنترل می کند که ضمن تامین نیازهای ساکنان ساختمان ها در عصر حاضر، به منابع نسل های آینده خدشه ای وارد نشود. امروزه استفاده از نور روز ، از تعبیه ی یک پنجره ی ساده در ساختمان فراتر رفته است. مصالح و تکنولوژی های جدید امکان بهبود و کنترل مقادیر روشنایی در فضاهای داخلی را فراهم کرده اند (Brain, 2015).
به طور کلی از محیط روشن شده با نور طبیعی انتظار می رود که:
1) نور کافی برای انجام فعالیت های انجام شونده در فضا را فراهم کند.
2) فضایی جذاب از نظر بصری برای کاربران فراهم کند.
3) نیاز های بیولوژیکی به نور را تامین کند.
4) به صرفه جویی در مصرف انرژی کمک کند (Andersen, 2014).
در جستار بعدی ضمن ارائه ی توضیحاتی در خصوص سیستم بینایی انسان، به مفهوم آسایش بصری پرداخته خواهد شد و عوامل سلب کننده ی آسایش بصری در یک فضا نیز مورد بررسی قرار خواهد گرفت. به این ترتیب به عنوان یک طراح و معمار خواهیم دانست برای طراحی فضای راحت و رضایت بخش از نظر بصری به چه مواردی لازم است توجه کنیم.
